summary

The Uffizi Galleries contain one of the most important collections of art of the Western World, ranging from Antiquity to the 20th century. Specially known for Renaissance artworks, the collection that was started by the Medici is housed in between three different places that join the two sides of the Arno River, from which The Uffizi is a part of, along with the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens.

Located in the Historic Centre of Florence, the Uffizi Galleries are one of the largest and most significant museum complexes in the world, due to its notorious collection of artworks specially dating the Italian Renaissance. The Uffizi was initially created with the art collection of the Medici family, that had been gifted to the city of Florence when the family’s reign seized. It opened its door to the public in 1765, and became the world’s first museum in 1865. The Uffizi is housed in a building designed by Giorgio Vasari (architect and author of the notorious biography Lives of the Artists), constructed between 1560 and 1580), created to accommodate the offices of the Florentine magistrates for the Medici family, while the top floor began to house the family’s art collection including the vast collection of Roman sculptures. The architecture of the building is quite notorious and known for its internal space, featuring sculptures of artists in niches on either side, as it opens up to the Arno river. The museum now occupies the first and second floors of the large building, housing collections of ancient sculptures and paintings ranging from the Middle Ages, with a special focus on the Renaissance, and including some works of the Modern period. Besides the vast collection of classical Roman sculptures, the museum includes works by many notorious Italian artists, including Giotto, Piero della Francesca, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and other European painters specially Flemish and Dutch, including Rembrandt.
