Significance

Leszek Piotrowski, known as Lesstro, is an internationally renowned realist painter, born on 19th December, 1984 in Gdynia, Poland. In 2009 he graduated from European Academy of Arts in Warsaw, earning his Master Degree in painting. Known for his work in classical realism, dealing with figurative painting, Lesstro creates large scale paintings showcasing the vitality and universal power of classical art.

Although very young, the artist had already achieved significant success at the international art scene in Hong Kong, while still a student, winning the Golden Trophy Award at the World’s Nude Show in Hong Kong. Through the course of his career, Lesstro became a highly regarded artist not only in the European context, but also in the American and the Chinese art scenes. Over the years, the artist has collected a great amount of prizes and awards, being the winner and finalist of several competitions and exhibiting all over the world – in Italy, Spain, Russia, USA, Germany, China and UK. Some of his Awards include: the 1st prize in the International Painting Competition in Italy, in 2009/2010; the 2nd prize in the Russian Art Week exhibition in Moscow, in 2016; and the 1st prize at the american Art Awards in Hollywood, in 2016. Having travelled the world showcasing his award winning paintings, Lesstro’s artworks have been exhibited in prestigious galleries throughout Europe, Middle East, Asia, Canada. They are held in the collections of MEAM (European Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, Spain), Baoqu Tang Gallery of Art in Hong Kong, prestigious Fine Art Gallery GRONERT in Munich, Germany, they can also be found in private collections in Dubai, Hong Kong and Poland.

Naturally, Lesstro has also been featured in numerous magazines and art publications, including Spanish “Llei D’Art”,  Italian Annuario d’Arte Contemporanea, American Annual Book of International Equine Art, “I SEGNALATI” – Great Book of Contemporary Painting Masters. In 2013, he got a 6 pages highlight in TuttoArabi, a world-wide Arabian Horse Magazine, about Lesstro’s career and his horse paintings. In 2015 he was included as special guest in Spanish Annuario “Arte y Libertad X” and published also in “Epoch Times”, USA.

The artist feels deeply moved by light and shadow, qualities that come through his works and are the reasons he chooses to paint a subject.

art

Lesstro got his master degree in Painting at the European Academy of Arts in Warsaw, Poland, a diploma with the highest marks under the guidance of Prof. Franciszek Starowieyski (a distinguished Polish painter).

An established classical painter, Lesstro’s work celebrates the heritage of European Art. The artist reflects on the techniques of the Old Masters, merging these with the spirited brushwork of the early Impressionists. With this in mind, the artist himself talks about what he aspires to accomplish:

“Even though it is still a bald artistic decision I create very classical art pieces. I am hoping to build a new movement of European art modeling itself after Dutch, Flemish, Spanish and Italian schools. Bringing together and reawakening enthusiasm for the Old Masters work and the urgent need for renewed reverence for reality, by bringing back skills and spirit of the pre-impressionist painters. My desire is to remind the audience we carry as human beings emotions, memory and dreams.”

The artist turned to painting as a way to battle the ephemerality of mainstream visual arts based purely on the digital format, making a case for the act of feeling something, in a close relationship between the viewer and the artwork.

“One can never get it by means of photo-based works, installations, video, digital work – such works appear and disappear very quickly from our memory much like this stream of mass-media information.”

“There are things in life that unite people. Art seems to be universal. So what is about art that makes it universal? Feeling, color, our sensory reaction to it. I create visual art of a perfect workshop, without falling back on experiment just for exercising experiment.”

Lesstro’s focus has been mainly on painting historical, genre scenes, orientalist subjects, female nudes, portraits and horses, while using classical techniques such as underpainting. His works are all done in oil on handmade canvas. Some of his methods include the use of rabbit glue, the application of underpainting (in the form of painting sketch), and the application of multiple coats of paint and varnish, to achieve a lustrous and intense colour.

influences

Lesstro’s work is evidently influenced by the Old Masters. He bases his work on: the study of light made by Caravaggio and Rembrandt, using the masterful technique of Chiaroscuro; the luscious colours of Johannes Vermeer; and the virtuosity of the brushwork of Diego Velázquez and Peter Paul Rubens.

Tristeza de Ana (2012)

Venus in Front of the Mirror (1613-1614) by Peter Paul Rubens

quotes

“There is so much evil and ugliness nowadays that I would like everybody looking at my paintings to associate them with feelings of beauty and good only. That is why women are my favorite painting objects. I try to show their beauty and endless mystery by means of chiaroscuro where light always wins – just like good overcomes evil.”
